There is so much malware for Windows that a new study has found it present of some 20% of tested Macs, hugely dwarfing the number of Macs infected with actual OS X malware.
The details come from a sampling of users who downloaded the free Mac antivirus software from Sophos. Among the 100,000 Macs reviewed by the security firm, 20 percent of them were carrying one or more instances of Windows malware.
Of course, having windows malware on a Mac won’t affect the Mac in any way, unless the user also happens to be running Boot Camp to allow dual-booting into Windows. While one in five Macs were found to have Windows malware, just 2.7 percent of machines studied by Sophos were infected with malware specifically tailored to OS X. And nearly all of that malware — 75.1 percent — came in just one form: “Flshplyr,” a variant of the “Flashback” Trojan that has already been tackled by Apple and others.
Sophos say that “…Mac owners should be ‘a responsible member of society’ and ensure that their system is not infected with any Windows malware.” This could help to stop the spread of such software to Windows machines. And it won’t do the profits of Sophos any harm, either.
It seems that the days of the humble 2D barcode (and hopefully it’s closely-related cousin the QR Code) will be numbered.
Toshiba have developed a completely new scanning system that can recognise objects that are passed over its scanning area. The primary focus has been for supermarkets, so the database of recognisable items is so far limited to things like fruit and vegetables, though this will be extended. The really magic thing about the system is the detail at which it can perform the recognition; not only will it be able to detect that you’ve scanned an apple, but it will know that you’ve scanned a Granny Smith rather than a Red Delicious. Gone will be the days of peeling off a barcode for a pack of button mushrooms and applying that to a 42inch LED TV box…
